Brad Stevens on significance of Jaylen Brown’s supermax extension: ‘Jaylen has been one of the NBA’s winningest players’

The Boston Celtics and All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown have come to terms on a five-year, $304 million supermax extension, the richest such deal in NBA history. Such a move will provide new stability to the club but also invites new unanswered questions.

Celtics president Brad Stevens addressed reporters Wednesday to discuss Brown’s new deal. The press conference in question was held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab, where Brown has been hosting a multi-day camp for Black and brown high school students in the Boston area. Stevens expressed his admiration for Brown and his enthusiasm for the deal.

“We are thrilled that Jaylen has decided to extend his contract and remain a Celtic for a long time,” Stevens said in a press release.

Brown, who turns 27 this October, will begin his new extension heading into the 2024-25 season when the Georgia native could earn roughly $52 million in annual salary. In the final year of the deal, Brown is set to earn north of $69 million.

Brown had one of his best seasons as a pro this last year, averaging 26.6 points per game on 49.1% shooting from the field, both career highs. He was also named to his second All-Star Game and first career All-NBA selection. Stevens spoke to Brown’s winning ways in celebrating this new deal.

“In addition to his individual accolades,” Stevens said. “Jaylen has been one of the NBA’s winningest players in both the regular and postseason over the past seven years.”

Brown’s commitment to the Boston community is a big part of his growing NBA legacy. During the press conference following the official signing of his new supermax extension, Brown spoke about using his new wealth to conquer systemic inequality and address social concerns.

Stevens noted Brown’s dedication to the greater good, something that has been consistent throughout his NBA career.

“I’ve been so impressed with how he has attacked every day with a relentless work ethic, a desire to improve, and a competitiveness to help his team win,” Stevens stated. “Equally as impressive is his continued commitment to making a difference in the community.”
