Lions general manager Brad Holmes will meet with the media on Wednesday afternoon at the NFL Scouting Combine. Before that podium time, Holmes kicked off his day by appearing with Peter Schrager on the NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” program.
The question of what is happening at quarterback in Detroit came up, as expected. Also as expected, Holmes left no doubt about the plan for 2023. Jared Goff is the unquestioned starter.
“It just has to make sense. Obviously, we like Jared. He’s our starter.”
Goff earned a Pro Bowl berth and has thrown over 300 consecutive passes without an interception to end the season. The Lions finished in the top five in offense in 2022 with Goff at the helm.
Holmes then addressed the gaping hole behind Goff, who is the only quarterback under contract in Detroit for 2023. Holmes understands that the depth has to be addressed, and better than it was a year ago.
“We don’t have a lot behind him,” Holmes said. “We were kind of sliding into home plate at the very end of training camp trying to find a backup quarterback. (We were) able to get Nate Sudfeld, and he did a nice job for us, but we’ve had these open, transparent conversations — we’re happy with Jared, he’s our starter, but we need to add some pieces in that room overall.”
