Boy, 5, killed in Glasgow bus crash tragedy named by police

A five-year-old boy who died after a bus crash has been named almost one week on from the tragedy as Ayan Khan Nooreen.

The youngster sustained grievous injuries following the incident on Calder Street in Glasgow on Tuesday April 4 at around 5.40pm, which involved a First Bus vehicle. Paramedics treated him at the scene but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A nine-year-old girl also involved in the collision was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children for treatment after sustaining what medics describe as "serious injuries". Police immediately launched an investigation and closed the road for several hours, re-opening it shortly before midnight.

In the days since the devastating collision tributes have been left to Ayan at Holy Cross Primary School on Calder Street, close to the scene of the incident at the Govanhill road's junction with Hickman Street.

Flowers and teddy bears have been tied to fences and lampposts by school staff and family friends.

One tribute read: "To the Khan family: my deepest condolences during this tragic time for your family. You are in our thoughts and prayers."

A bunch of flowers, labelled as a tribute from staff and pupils at Holy Cross Primary School, was inscribed: "Praying for Ayan."

Another mourner left a stuffed toy dog tied to a lamppost with a bouquet of flowers. They attached a note, reading: "Fly with the angels, beautiful boy."

Cllr Elaine Gallagher, Scottish Greens councillor for the Southside Central ward, which covers the Calder Street area, paid tribute online. She said in a tweet: "A terrible occurrence. My thoughts for his family and for the girl still in hospital."

Cllr Dr Soryia Siddique, Labour Southside Central councillor, said: "Heartbreaking news hearing a little boy has died. Thoughts and prayers with the family at this very sad time."

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the tragedy. Members of the public who may have seen the incident, or captured it on dashcam, have been urged to get in touch if they have not done so already.

Sergeant Nick Twigg said: “Our thoughts are with Ayan’s family and everyone affected by this tragic incident.

"Our enquiries to establish the full circumstances remain ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have information but hasn’t yet spoken to us to come forward.

“In addition, if you have dash-cam that could help with our crash investigation then please contact us.”

In the meantime, First Bus says it is "working closely" with Police Scotland as inquiries are carried out.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "We can confirm that one of our buses was involved in the incident on Calder Street on Tuesday evening. The thoughts of everyone at First Bus are with all those involved and affected by this incident."

Anyone who can assist is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2648 of Tuesday, 4 April, 2023.
