An 11-year-old boy died on a Welsh beach after he was swept into the sea on the evening of July 1, an inquest has heard. The inquest into the death of Zac Thompson, from Pennar in Pembrokeshire, was formally opened in Haverfordwest on July 13.
Assistant coroner for Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, Gareth Lewis, heard how the coastguard was alerted to “reports to a person swept off rocks” at 9pm on the Friday evening. Zac, a pupil at Pembroke Dock Community School, was initially airlifted to Glangwili Hospital and then on to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for treatment.
In a brief report read out at the hearing, coroner's officer Lisa Jenkins said Zac was pronounced dead at 7.30pm the next day. Mr Lewis adjourned the inquest and said: “I will need to adjourn pending the investigation into the events leading up to the tragic accident.” The inquest will resume at a later date.
Following his death, the school paid tribute to the year six pupil , describing him as a “popular and “much loved character “ with a “huge zest for life”. You can read their full tribute here.
