Bombhead Lee Otway looks very different from loveable rogue 17 years from Hollyoaks exit

If you watched Hollyoaks throughout the early 00s, chances are you'll fondly remember the character David 'Bombhead' Burke and his loveable personality.

Fans of the Channel 4 soap will recall hapless Bombhead, played by actor Lee Otway, and his eccentric way of life - dabbing in all sorts of jobs, from magician to trying his luck at becoming a priest.

Thanks to his charming ways and his bromance with Lee Hunter, Bombhead quickly become a fan-favourite - leading to actor Lee being nominated for Best Actor at the 2004 National Television awards.

Hearts were broken the following year, when Bombhead decided it was time to bid farewell to the village and headed off to join the circus.

But what has the actor behind the much-loved character been up to since?

Based on recent social media snaps, it appears Lee, now 40, has been spending plenty of time in the gym following his days as a soap star.

The actor credits his bulging biceps and enviable six pack with protein-packed meals and working out up to five times a week.

"Six months ago, I noticed I was out of shape and unfit. Even just climbing the stairs I'd be out of breath," Lee previously explained to the Mirror when discussing his new fit bod.

"I cut out alcohol, and underwent a training plan with a personal trainer. I wasn't eating enough, and when I was, it was usually a takeaway or something convenient. Gone were the takeaways and beers, replaced by protein shakes, smoothies, and five high-protein, balanced-carb meals a day.

"I train four to five times a week and usually have a cheat day on a Saturday when I treat myself to a takeaway."

Shortly after leaving Hollyoaks in 2005, Lee enjoyed stints on reality TV shows such as Celebrity Stars in their Eyes and of course, the original celebrity-packed version of Love Island.

During his stint on the second series of the reality TV show in 2006, which saw Calum Best and Bianca Gascoigne crowned winners, Lee was rumoured to have enjoyed a smooch with Big Brother 3 winner Kate Lawler.

Discussing her time on the show last year, the mum-of-one put an end to the speculation she and the former Hollyoaks actor had a little holiday romance.

"And can we just address the Lee Otway rumours of me snogging him?" she said against a backdrop of the actor on her Instagram Stories in June.

"Lee Otway and I did not play tonsil tennis in Love Island in 2006, alright?"

Kate's partner Martin was heard off-camera, playfully asking her if she is sure about that.

"I gave him a little peck on the lips and that was that. It was a friendly peck on the lips."

Romance was certainly off the cards between the Big Brother star and Lee due to the actor's love of cigarettes.

"He smoked and I remember saying 'You've got fag breath!'

"We shared a bed in Love Island because we were mates and all we did was laugh at Brendan from Strictly Come Dancing."

Following his stint on reality TV, Lee has continued to act on the small screen - including notching up appearances on the BBC drama The Syndicate and daytime soap Doctors.

The gym bunny has also reprised his role as Bombhead on Hollyoaks twice since his 2005 exit, last making a guest appearance on the main show back in 2012.
