Boleros, aka Shrugs, Are Great Layering Devices to Help Sartorially Navigate the Cold Weather Months

Every winter wardrobe needs a few bold boleros. (Credit: Courtesy of The Frankie Shop)

There are certain pieces that come in and out of the fashion lexicon. Acid-wash jeans. Bike shorts. Fanny packs. You can definitely add boleros to the list. Also known as shrugs, they make bundling up for winter easy and even pay homage to the current balletcore obsession. Which is great because leg warmers and leotards are a little too on the nose to rock in public.

Boleros aren't one-note. The category covers everything from separate sleeves to more cropped silhouettes. Some even have attached gloves so you don't have to spend extra dough on the cold-weather accessory. There are turtleneck, cardigan and sweater versions. The Jacquemus La Chemise Machou Cotton and Linen Shirt even qualifies.

In some cases, the shrugs are part of a matched set. Not that we're complaining. It's like getting two stylish things for one price. Mango's light heather gray midi dress and corresponding bolero project a comfy yet glamorous vibe. Pixie Market's two-piece tops have plenty of personality. Then there's Tom Ford's offering featuring a sleek bolero that gives the illusion of being a cut-out turtleneck. It doesn't cost Tom Ford prices, either, ringing in at $345.

Speaking of prices, a vast majority of our favorites are relatively reasonable. That means you can really stock up and sport a different one (almost) every single day of the week. The aforementioned Mango pairing will only set you back $49.99. The most expensive comes courtesy of Alaïa, which isn't all that surprising, with its red hot Cutout Technical Bolero going for $850. There's also a coordinating swimsuit for your next vacay if you have have the financial ability to really splurge.

Scroll down to discover the top boleros that'll add an extra layer of warmth to your winter wardrobe.
