Just because a player qualifies for the criteria of an NBA supermax contract or extension does not mean that the team they play for has to give it to them if the front office is not convinced their play (or their future) merits such an offer. And renowned Boston Celtics sports writer Bob Ryan has his doubts about one such prospective supermax recipient whose name has been in the news of late for that very reason.
Ryan doubts star Celtics forward Jaylen Brown deserves a full supermax extension, and that the narrative behind his candidacy is based on NBA rules rather than his performance. Ryan recognizes that the current system will likely lead to Brown receiving the max contract regardless, though.
