BMW ended production of the second-generation 8 Series in April 2026, and there’s still no obvious replacement on the horizon. So if you’ve been waiting for a Neue Klasse version of BMW’s big halo coupe, you might be waiting a while.
Speaking with Automotive News, a BMW executive recently said moving the big coupe into the Neue Klasse family is "not feasible." That effectively leaves BMW without a flagship grand tourer for the time being. BMW reportedly considered giving that job to the relaunched Alpina brand, too, but that plan was apparently shelved.
Then there’s the Vision BMW Alpina.
First shown at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2026 and later displayed during Monterey Car Week, the concept looks an awful lot like an answer to the question BMW hasn’t officially answered yet: What comes after the 8 Series?
Why A Neue Klasse 8 Series Doesn’t Make Sense
The G15 8 Series coupe debuted in 2018 on BMW’s CLAR platform, followed by the G14 convertible and G16 Gran Coupe. CLAR still underpins a huge chunk of BMW’s lineup, but it wasn’t designed around the high-voltage electrical architecture and software-heavy systems that define Neue Klasse.
That’s likely what BMW means when it says an 8 Series move to Neue Klasse isn’t feasible. Adapting an older platform for a completely different electrical and mechanical architecture would essentially mean starting over. For a relatively low-volume grand tourer, BMW apparently doesn’t see the business case.
The BMW XM successor also appears to be facing a similar problem, which gives us a pretty good idea of how difficult it is for niche flagship models to make the jump to BMW’s next-generation architecture.
Alpina Could Be The Answer
This is where the Vision BMW Alpina gets interesting.
The long, low coupe features a classic shark-nose front end, a V8 under the hood, and an interior loaded with leather, metal, and crystal. Its proportions are unmistakably grand tourer, and they look especially familiar if you remember the old 8 Series Gran Coupe.
BMW hasn’t said the concept is headed for production. Officially, it’s a one-off design study. But it’s hard not to wonder whether BMW is using the car to gauge interest in a much more upscale Alpina GT.
That possibility makes more sense now that Alpina has officially become a standalone ultra-luxury brand within BMW Group. Starting January 1, 2026, BMW Alpina operates separately within the group, with its cars built at BMW facilities and positioned above the regular BMW lineup.
The first production BMW Alpina of this new era is expected to be based on the 7 Series and use a V8, with a launch reportedly targeted around 2027. If that car establishes Alpina as BMW’s answer to the ultra-luxury market, a large Gran Coupe-style GT based on the Vision concept would seem like a pretty natural next step.
Motor1’s Take: BMW doesn’t seem interested in forcing the 8 Series into the Neue Klasse era, and honestly, that may be for the best. Rather than spending a huge amount of money engineering a low-volume coupe onto a platform that wasn’t designed for it, BMW can let Alpina take over the job.
