The stretch of Hollinwood Avenue between Londis and The British Raj in Moston was taped off following the incident. The M.E.N. understands there was an 'altercation' nearby involving a number of people, before the injured man desperately approached staff at the Londis store for help.

The owner of a salon said: "He went in and asked for help, you could see where they'd got him. There was blood everywhere.

"It was a machete, he must have put his hand up to stop them. It's not safe anymore, it usually doesn't happen around here."

Shop owners within the cordon were not able to open up until the police tape was lifted. A staff member working at Butterfield Bicycles said: "I went to buy a sandwich, but I wasnt' allowed in. I saw him [the victim] on the floor with police stood around him.

"There was blood everywhere. Then they blocked the area and took him away."

One man, who lives on a nearby estate, said: "It was group of people having a fight and it got very bad. The police came and blocked this road off."

"No arrests have been made at this time. A scene is currently still in place on Hollinwood Avenue, with no disruptions to the wider area.
