Black woman tries Pilates at HOTWORX for the first time. Then she was asked to explain what she pulled from her gym cubby: ‘not what happened’

What was supposed to be a routine workout quickly turned into a debate about race, profiling and how far a business can go when trying to recover a missing item. A TikTok video posted by @syduniversoul, California realtor Sydney La Day, documented the aftermath of what should have been an ordinary Pilates class at a HOTWORX fitness studio in Belmont, California. Instead of leaving with the usual post-workout endorphins, La Day found herself accused of stealing a $1,000 ring.

The incident began when another gym member reported that her ring, valued at approximately $1,000, had gone missing. Rather than simply following the studio’s standard lost-and-found procedures, the manager — who was later identified as the son of the franchise owner — decided to review locker room surveillance footage.
