Black Spots on Seizure Pills Trigger a Nationwide Recall and the Wrong Reaction Could Be Dangerous

A nationwide recall of carbamazepine tablets has been logged in federal enforcement records after black spots were found on the pills, and the most important thing patients can do is also the least intuitive. Carbamazepine controls seizures. Stopping it suddenly because a pill looks unusual carries a risk of its own.

The recall covers 1,968 bottles of Carbamazepine Tablets USP, 200 mg, in 1,000-count prescription bottles, according to an updated Food and Drug Administration enforcement report described in pharmaceutical trade reporting. The affected product carries NDC 51672-4005-3. The voluntary recall was initiated by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Inc. The tablets were made by Taro Pharmaceutical Industries in Haifa Bay, Israel, and distributed by Taro Pharmaceuticals USA in Hawthorne, New York. The action is classified as Class II and remains ongoing. Distribution was nationwide.
