Idukki: Where the Vine Grows
The drive from Kochi to Idukki takes roughly four hours on NH183, climbing from sea level into the Western Ghats until the air cools and the road narrows to a single lane through rubber and cardamom. Black pepper, Piper nigrum, grows here as a climbing vine, trained up silver oak or arecanut trees that function as living trellises. The vines can reach ten metres. The berries hang in long spikes called drupes, and a farmer harvests them twice: once when the lowest berry on a spike just begins to turn red, and once again if the estate is large enough to stagger the crop. Idukki district produces a significant share of Kerala's pepper output, and the variety that commands the highest price at auction is Karimunda, a small, dense berry with a sharp heat that sits in the back of the throat rather than on the tip of the tongue.
