Marvel has revealed it will release Black Panther 3 with British actor David Jonsson playing the titular hero.
Ryan Coogler is returning to direct and Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri, with Winston Duke back as M’Baku.
Jonsson, 32, will take on the role of Black Panther, also known as T’Challa, who will be the son of the character of the same name originally played by the late Chadwick Boseman.
Welcoming Jonsson on stage at San Diego Comic-Con, where the sequel was announced, Coogler said: “The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played – our T’Challa – in that film.
“And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up, he comes of age.”
Jonsson added: “I want to say thank you so much, thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin (Feige, president of Marvel Studios), thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and the privilege and the blessing to join.
“I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honour is entirely mine.”
The film will be released in US cinemas on December 15 2028, with a UK release date yet to be confirmed.
Coogler first brought the fictional African country of Wakanda to the big screen in 2018 with Black Panther, and followed it with the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, two years after Boseman died at the age of 43 in 2020 with colon cancer.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever follows Wright’s character, Shuri, as she takes on the role of Black Panther following the death of Boseman’s character T’Challa.
The Black Panther character has also appeared in other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).
Coogler also directed two series based in the world of Black Panther with Ironheart and Eyes Of Wakanda.
Jonsson began his career on the West End and has gone on to star in BBC and HBO television series Industry, as well as films including Rye Lane (2023), Alien: Romulus (2024), and The Long Walk (2025).
Born in London, Jonsson made his screen debut in 2018 in two episodes of the ITV detective drama Endeavour, before being cast as Augustus ‘Gus’ Sackey in the first two series of Industry from 2020 to 2022.
He also has roles in the upcoming films The Chaperones, Benn/Eubank and Scandalous.
