The sixth season of Black Mirror is set to land on Netflix this June with a new trailer promising a host of big guest stars.
Billed by Netflix as “the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet”, the satirical sci-fi thriller series created by Charlie Brooker will feature Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Myha’la Herrold, Rob Delaney, Josh Hartnett, Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, Paapa Essiedu, John Hannah, Himesh Patel and Rory Culkin.
“I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people – and myself – or else what’s the point?” Brooker told Netflix’s official site Tudum. “It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself.”
He said that he started writing the show by “upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect”.
He added: “Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is. The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through – but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before.”
Brooker also praised an “incredible roster of disgustingly skillful, smart directors working with a cast of actors so talented they frankly have no right to exist”.
Last year, the Atlanta and Bullet Train star Zazie Beetz teased what’s to come in her episode. “I wouldn’t say my character is having a lot of fun,” she said. “But I think there’s a really great tongue-in-cheek dark element to it, premonition kind of element. The mirror reflecting back on us.”
The show, which originally started on Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix in 2016, has won multiple awards including eight Emmys. Previous stars have included Miley Cyrus, Hayley Atwell, Andrew Scott, Bryce Dallas Howard, Letitia Wright, Jon Hamm and Daniel Kaluuya.
“I can’t wait for people to binge their way through it all and hope they enjoy it – especially the bits they shouldn’t,” Brooker said.
