Black Mirror season 6: new trailer reveals cast and release date

After a cryptic tweet breaking almost three years’ worth of silence, the official Black Mirror Twitter account surfaced with a new trailer.

It showcases a flurry of famous faces, all in various states of horror and surprise — fitting for the show’s reputation as a dark dystopian series that occasionally hits a little too close to home for viewer comfort.

The last season, helmed by Charlie Brooker, aired back in June of 2019, which means that Black Mirror hasn’t been able to explore cultural events like the pandemic and the political turbulence in both the UK and the US over the past few years.

As a show heavily influenced by current affairs and pop culture, we can surely expect to see the influence of the past three years on the show. Here’s what we know about the upcoming season so far.

What does the trailer show?

The trailer doesn’t give a lot away, instead preferring to present a range of settings, from an American-style diner to what looks like a Space station, populated by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul.

As fans of the show will know, each episode of Black Mirror is a self-contained story, although there are Easter eggs that crop up and connect various episodes of the shows, suggesting that they all exist within the same universe, as confirmed in episode Black Museum.

What we can tell from the trailer is that the usual themes of horror and technology will return, with the sound of distorted dial-up connections heard throughout and various instances of violence from the characters, including one woman smashing another’s head through a glass display case.

Judging from the fashion of the characters, we will also see different time periods or styles throughout the show, too, ranging from futuristic settings to vintage clothing from the Sixties and Seventies.

Production values have also increased, with a more glitzy feel depicted in the trailer.

Black Mirror Season 6 cast

The show is also sticking to its past format of showcasing both American and British actors, with a lengthy cast list, many of whom are already well-known, including:

  • Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
  • Zazie Beetz (Joker)
  • Salma Hayek Pinault (From Dusk Till Dawn, Frida)
  • Kate Mara (Call Jane)
  • Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful)
  • Samuel Blenkin (The Witcher: Blood Origin)
  • Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You)
  • Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts)
  • Annie Murphy (Schitt's Creek)

Black Mirror Season 6 release date

The end of the trailer glitches into a title card for Season 6, promising a release date in June, 2023, just several weeks away.

Seeing as Season 5 aired on June 5, this could be a satisfying date for Season 6 to air, exactly three years on.

However, no exact date is yet confirmed at the time of writing.
