Black History Month globes to be installed in Leeds street to educate people on slavery

October is Black History Month and every year the month is dedicated to honouring Black communities across the world and the people that enact change and educate on the history of Black people. The month first began in the US before being fully recognised in the UK a few years ago.

It's a time to reflect on the past, learn from tragedies and make sure, going forward, that Black communities get the recognition they deserve. In Leeds, there are many events held every October, including art installations, festivals and talks from Black community leaders and charities.

This year, alongside various markets and exhibitions, Briggate will become a gallery for Black artists, showing off 10 educational sculptures in the heart of Leeds.

The art hopes to educate and help people understand the UK's relationship with the slave trade (David Oates)

The World Reimagined, a groundbreaking national art project, was set up to transform how people learn about the Transatlantic slave trade. The group will be bringing 10 globe sculpture installations to Leeds and these will be on display from October 18 to October 31.

The installation is free and open to all, with a specific remit on inviting families and communities to talk and understand Black history and the UK's often misplaced relationship with the slave trade - showing that racial justice can and will be a reality.

The globes are impressive installations, featuring highly decorative art work, which are currently dotted across the city. All 10 of the globes will be placed on the Briggate, for shoppers and visitors to see.
