Bishop Auckland man vows to drive 24 hours to Ukraine to help those impacted by Russian invasion

As more than 500,000 people flee the war on Ukraine, one County Durham man has vowed to travel more than 1,400 miles to the area to help those caught up in the crisis.

Jack Vincent, from Bishop Auckland, plans to embark on a 24 hour drive from the North East to the border of Ukraine and Poland later this week.

And he is currently gathering donations of items such as clothes, nappies and mobile phones to give to those who fled their homes amid what Boris Johnson described as a "tidal wave of violence" and a "hideous and barbaric venture of Vladimir Putin."

Like millions of people across the country, Jack was left horrified by the harrowing scenes emerging from Ukraine after Russia invaded the country on February 24.

But refusing to stand back and watch events unfold, the operations engineer at Red Property Solutions quickly took to Facebook to announce his plan to help those in need and enlist the help of the local community.

Jack said: "Sitting here on a Sunday afternoon watching the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfold into an all-out war on T.V. Now, Putin is putting his nuclear options on alert and hundreds of thousands of families are being torn apart.

"Putting politics aside, these people are flooding into Poland but have no idea where to go next. I have space for some here in Bishop Auckland.

"I'm going on a road trip to Medyka on the border of Poland and Ukraine. Ideally, I would love to take a minibus loaded with clothes and everyday essentials to then bring back a family or two here to County Durham."

He added: "I'm not sure if anyone else is having the same thoughts but, if you are, then your help would be appreciated."

Jack said he currently has a transit van and a car, as well as two drivers and some cash for fuel for his journey and he's happy to do more than one trip if necessary.

He is looking for donations of clothes, shoes, nappies, sanitary products and mobile phones with chargers, as well as cash for fuel and vacuum storage bags to help with his journey.

In addition, he is asking landlords to get in touch if they have empty properties available to get in touch with him via Facebook Messenger or email at jack@rps-limited.co.uk.

Anyone who would like to drop off donations can do so at 94 Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland. DL14 7EQ between 9am and 5pm, or Aquarius Nails & Beauty 75 Cockton Hill Road.
