Neighbours were awoken by sirens during an "upsetting" house fire in Nottingham. Crews were called to the blaze on Earls Close in Bilborough at 6.30am on Monday (January 6).
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service asked people to avoid the area and keep windows closed as they extinguished the blaze, which did not cause any injuries but resulted in significant damage to a property. Six fire engines as well as an aerial ladder platform were used before crews left at 1.30pm.
Liaqat Mehmood, 45, a delivery driver who lives on nearby Brindley Road, was woken by the emergency services as they rushed to the house fire. He said: "I was woken up by the sirens between 6am and 7am. There was smoke coming out the back of the house from what I could see, but I am not sure what has happened inside. They cordoned both sides of the close off."

Adrian Pearson, 66, who lives just next to the entrance to the close, said: "I just woke up to see the fire engine sirens and that was the first I knew about it. It was quite a surprise.
"I couldn't see anything at all apart from the fire engines, it looks like they are done now and hopefully everyone is alright. It is an awful thing to happen, you never expect it on your street."
Zahid Mahmood, 39, a mechanic whose mum lives on Brindley Road, added: "I was just dropping my mum off and then I saw the police car first, and I started wondering what had happened. As I came down the road then I saw the fire engines, which was also an upsetting thing to see as then I knew something had happened. The big thing is that everyone seems OK."
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed no one was injured during the incident, with all occupants outside when firefighters arrived. In a post at 1.30pm, a spokesperson said: "Crews are now leaving the scene, but will return later today for a reinspection. A fire investigation is taking place this afternoon."
