An assassin who shot dead a bikie boss, allegedly at the request of an underworld rival on trial for murder, admitted the killing to his girlfriend and told her he was on a secret government mission, a court has been told.

The ex-soldier turned gun for hire, who cannot be named for legal reasons, killed senior Rebels bikie Nick Martin at Perth Motorplex on December 12, 2020 in a sniper-style attack.

The shooter used a .308-calibre rifle to target Martin from a distance of more than 300 metres while the bikie was sitting in a spectator area at the racetrack.

The bullet travelled through Martin's body and exited from his lower back before striking another man in his arm, seriously injuring him.
