Jeff Johns has marked one year since his near-death experience in a devastating house fire. The legendary Bristol gig-goer and artist, who is affectionately known by Bristolians as ‘Big Jeff’, was described by his supporters as a "warrior" as he shared a photo and video showing his body scars.
Taking to Instagram today (June 6) he wrote: “One year on from the horrific accident that pretty much killed me. Well I’m still here @avonfirerescue @southmeadhospitalcharity.” He then shared a video of himself playing the drum kit, which he referred to as his "morning physio".
It was June 6, 2022 when Big Jeff returned home from the O2 Academy in Bristol, where he was watching Amyl and the Sniffers perform. On his return he decided to cook himself a meal, but the bottom of his shirt caught alight on the gas hob resulting in a flash fire.

He spent weeks in an induced coma and months in a burns unit, having been left with scarring, but this year he's back on Bristol's music scene as he continues his recovery. After the accident he also Jeff worked alongside the fire service to raise awareness about fire safety at home, backing the 'stop, drop and roll' campaign.
Under his post today, love poured in from friends and followers who congratulated him on his strength and resilience. One supporter wrote: “Thanks for showing us your scars, you are doing amazing and it's nice to see you out and about again, enjoying the things you love, keep on rockin' fella.” Another hailed him a "warrior", writing: "Keep fighting the good fight."
A third said: “I salute your resilience Jeff. As someone who used to work in burns theatres at Southmead and before that Frenchay, I have some idea of what you must be going through.”
Another friend penned: “Dearest Jeff, I'm in awe of your strength and resilience and your determination to get yourself back out to gigs. I know how much living an independent life means to you and it's been beyond wonderful to see you not just going to gigs but playing them. Love and hugs to you xx.”
