Big Jeff feels 'lucky to be alive' after Bristol house fire as he thanks hospital staff

'Big Jeff' Johns has said he is 'lucky to be alive' after he was badly injured in a house fire at his home in Bristol. Jeff Johns, 39, was rushed to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, in June to be treated at a specialist burns unit.

He was moved from the intensive care unit at the end of July but Jeff may remain in hospital for "many months" after he has sustained severe burns in a cooking fire at his home in Totterdown. He regained consciousness and was taken off a ventilator at the end of June.

In the most recent update from the artist, Jeff has said he was "lucky to be alive" and thanks the staff who are helping his recovery at the hospital in Swansea. Yesterday (August 2) he wrote into Maryanne Hobbs' BBC Radio 6 Music show to ask for a shout-out for those who have "done wonders" for aiding his recovery.

His post shared to Twitter revealed that he suffered from "49 degree burns" during the incident. A photo released by his family last month showed severe burns to his chest and face, with his trademark hair cut short.

Jeff's tweet read: "Hi @maryannehobbs im tuning in from Moriston Hospital nat Swansea. Can you give the wwonderful Drs and nurses in the burns unit a Massive shout out. They have done wonders in aiding my recovery from 49. Degree burns. Im so lucky to be alive."

Fans of the Bristol gig goer, who has been severely missed from the city's music scene, replied with words of support for Jeff after his post, which is only the second tweet he has sent since the fire. Jeff - who has amassed more than 18,000 followers - is usually very active on Twitter.

Wolf Alice band member Joel Amey wrote: "So glad to hear about you my dude - I came back off of tour to three of your wonderful paintings !! Going up on the wall asap! Rest up and see you soon."

Bristol music venue Fleece replied: "Hope your recovery is going well mate - gigs aren't the same without seeing you down the front!"

Portishead's Geoff Barrow added: "Hi Jeff mate good to see you tweeting. Bristol ain’t the same without you. Take your time and come back fully charged!"
