Bhilai Steel Plant accidents: 2 officers suspended as 2 workers killed

RAIPUR: Two senior officers of the public sector Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) have been suspended with inquiry pending for their alleged negligence after two people were killed and seven injured in four separate accidents that took place in the steel plant during the last one week.

One of the biggest steel producers of the country, BSP has witnessed four back-to-back accidents in past one week, with the latest one occurring on Thursday night leaving a contractual worker dead.

According to information, the reasons for the occurrence of accidents are under investigation and committees for each incident have been separately constituted.

Two senior officers were suspended by the BSP management as inquiry was ordered in the units being headed by them.

The four accidents that took place include the death of worker Arjun Sahu who was shifted to hospital in injured condition.

Earlier on June 3 and 4, seven workers sustained burns in flash of metal while on June 1, worker Rahul Upadhyay died in a furnace blast.

Arjun, 42, is survived by wife and three daughters and the workers have demanded proper compensation in the case.

The major reasons coming to the fore were that of negligence in safety norms, badly maintained equipment and carelessness by the workers while sources said that the union workers’ elections are due in July and the members have gone active by raising issues and fulfilling their agendas.

The workers’ union has been staging agitation in front of the gate of the plant.

Those who sustained burns are undergoing treatment at Sector 9 hospital and their condition is stated to be stable.
