Bhagavad Gita’s Timeless Wisdom on Anger & Emotional Mastery

Anger is an emotion that can cause destructive outcomes in our lives if it goes out of control. The truth is, along with obliterating the inner harmony of an individual, anger creates chaos in the environment in which he or she is living as well. With Bhagwan Krishna’s grace, Bhagavad Gita has some powerful verses that can help us keep our anger in check. A balanced emotional state is absolutely necessary to attain oneness with the Supreme truth of existence and, as a result, ensure Moksha or ultimate liberation. Lets explore two of those very effective and divine verses on anger-management contained in Bhagavad Gita.

Lord Krishna on Destructive Nature of Anger

In chapter 2 of Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna: “From anger comes delusion and from delusion there is confusion of memory, and then there is loss of reason. From that, there is complete ruin.”

This verse can be considered as the most profound words of wisdom that were ever written on the destructive nature of anger. Here, Bhagwan Krishna has showed us the chain reaction that can manifest as a result of a spark of anger. The aspect to be noted here is the fact that a spark of anger can ultimately result in “complete ruin” of an individual. By connecting anger with “complete ruin”, Lord Krishna has proved to us the extreme importance of attaining emotional stability and balance.

In chapter 5, Lord Krishna says: “Those who are free from lust and anger, and have realised the Self, for them, there is spiritual bliss both here and hereafter.”

A key reason for anger, hatred and other negative emotions is division. The truth is, even though people may seem different when we look at them through our senses, the divine truth that is working within all of us is the same. The same Godly essence is present in the soul of a beggar sitting on the roadside as well as in soul of the richest man in the world. Therefore, when we are hurting another individual due to the negativities that we have created inside our hearts, we are actually hurting our inner Godly essence as well. Realise the truth of divine equality of every living being and become freed from all kinds of negative emotions.
