VPNs, or virtual private networks, are a hot topic at the moment, with demand for the cybersecurity tool surging after the Online Safety Act. It’s been one year since the government enforced its under-16 social media policy – and it’s now ruled out plans to restrict VPN usage in the UK.
The Online Safety Act allows Ofcom (the country's official communications regulator) to enforce extra safety checks on users, in particular, mandatory age checks on anyone looking for adult content. The process involves uploading government-issued ID, such as passports and driving licences, and uploading biometric data or financial information to prove your age and access content.
