  • The Balmoral, Princes Street - Best for traditionalists
  • Eden Locke, George Street - Best for local living
  • Market Street Hotel, Market Street - Best for design gurus
  • Gleneagles Townhouse, St Andrew Square (opening in June) - Best for trendsetters
  • The Scotsman Hotel, North Bridge - Best for news hounds
  • The Grassmarket Hotel, Grassmarket - Best for big kids
  • The Raeburn, Raeburn Place - Best for homebodies
  • The Witchery, Castlehill - Best for drama queens
  • Cheval Abbey Strand, Abbey Strand - Best for history buffs

In their article, Nat Geo refer to Edinburgh's 'constantly evolving accommodation scene' and say: "sleek boutique hotels have popped up in grand Georgian townhouses, former banks and historic tenements have been converted into designer aparthotels, and a raft of hip hostels now offer excellent value for money.

"Big names are wanting a slice of the action, too: W Edinburgh is set to open this winter in a building wrapped in burnished metal ribbons (dubbed the ‘Walnut Whip’), bringing some more modern pizzazz into this timeless cityscape."
