Benni McCarthy lifts lid on Manchester United role and coaching Cristiano Ronaldo

Benni McCarthy has lifted the lid on his first week at Manchester United and what it has been like to work with Cristiano Ronaldo as part of the job.

It was revealed last month that Erik ten Hag would add McCarthy to his backroom staff as a first-team coach, with a particular focus on working with the forwards at the club.

The 44-year-old officially started work at United last week and, although he's still settling into life at the club he has supported since a child, he is delighted with how things are going so far.

“I’m part of the technical team, first team coach obviously. So together with the manager and the assistant manager, when they construct the training sessions, I’ll be in and around and just help where I can and then having my role with the offensive players,” he told SuperSport .

“Co-ordinating movements and finishing and making sure that the guys are sharp and that they’re ready and that the goalscoring continues and that they get the right goal scoring boots on, so that will be my functions."

A key part of his role is working with the forwards at the club and he has already had the chance to work closely with Ronaldo on the training ground.

He added: “So far it’s been going good. I’ve had a few opportunities to work with [Cristiano] Ronaldo and the rest of the guys upfront and working on our finishing.

"But as the time goes by and things start getting more hectic with the Premier League schedule, I think I’ll have more time and find my feet and then I’ll have my work cut out for me."
