Maybe Manchester United were listening after all. The Ralf Rangnick era at OId Trafford is one that will quickly be forgotten and his consultancy role was axed before it had even begun, but his transfer advice to the club might well have cut through.
Rangnick was distinctly unimpressed with what he discovered at United, although arguably not as unimpressed as club staff and players at his own methods. His coaching stint was so disastrous, with so many bridges burnt, it was always untenable for him to remain in his two-year consultancy contract.
But towards the end of last season, as he came out fighting in public, he implored the club to focus on signing young players for the future, rather than proven stars.
