Bengaluru techie spends ₹3.6 lakh in a month, still manages to save ₹80,000

The tech professional, identified as Souraja, posted a video on Instagram explaining his expenditures for the month. According to him, the largest expense was a new bike, which cost approximately ₹2.51 lakh. Although he purchased it at the end of February, the payment—made via credit card—was cleared in March, making it the biggest contributor to that month’s spending.

Apart from this one-time purchase, Souraja also allocated ₹50,000 to support his family, sending money home to his mother. He emphasized that financial responsibility toward family remains a priority despite living independently in a metro city.

His investments and Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) accounted for ₹20,000, reflecting a disciplined approach to long-term financial planning. Housing expenses were relatively moderate for the city, with his share of rent in a 3 BHK flat coming to ₹18,000.

Breaking down his daily living costs, he revealed that he spent around ₹3,700 on domestic help, including a cook and maid. Food expenses remained controlled, with about ₹2,000 spent on dining out and ordering in. Groceries added another ₹5,000 to his monthly budget, while his electricity bill stood at ₹700. Notably, his phone and internet bills were excluded, as they were reimbursed by his employer.

Travel and fuel expenses were slightly higher than usual due to his new bike. He shared that he took a trip to Coorg to complete 1,000 kilometres before the vehicle’s first service, with his share of the trip costing around ₹6,000.

In total, his expenses for March came to approximately ₹3.59–₹3.6 lakh. Despite this substantial spending, Souraja stated that he was still able to save around ₹80,000 from his salary.

The post quickly gained traction online, with users reacting to both his spending habits and income level. While some were impressed by his ability to save despite high expenses, others were curious about his salary, noting that his financial capacity allowed for both significant spending and savings. Additionally, some viewers pointed out that his rent seemed relatively affordable for Bengaluru standards.

The viral breakdown has since fueled conversations around salaries, cost of living, and financial priorities in urban India, particularly among young professionals in the tech industry.
