BENGALURU: BBMP is confident of achieving its target of vaccinating those in the 15-17 age group with the first dose this weekend as most schools and colleges have reopened.
The vaccination drive for youngsters commenced in January but didn’t go as planned with the surge in cases forcing educational institutions to stop offline classes. Now that the city is seeing a steady decline in the number of cases every day, the government has allowed schools and colleges to resume offline classes.
The vaccination target set for all zones except Dasarahalli was above 40,000. While Dasarahalli was asked to vaccinate 19,791 people, south zone has the highest target of 95,982. While the overall target for all its eight zones was 4.4 lakh, BBMP vaccinated 2.8 lakh youngsters as of Wednesday.
Trilok Chandra, special commissioner (health), BBMP, said: “The target was set after receiving data from schools and colleges. We are currently having a very focused, institution-based approach. We’re conducting review meetings every day with respective zones as we want to complete this in the next few days.”
As of Wednesday, Mahadevapura zone achieved 80% coverage, followed by west zone at 74%. Yelahanka zone achieved the least coverage at 48%.
