Bengals vs. 49ers gets major shakeup with Brock Purdy injury

Wednesday provided a stunner of an injury update before the Cincinnati Bengals take on the San Francisco 49ers.

And the stunner comes from the 49ers side, with the team announcing that starting quarterback Brock Purdy has entered concussion protocol.

An offer for Bengals fans

The kicker is this, provided by ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

“Brock Purdy is now unlikely to play Sunday vs. the Bengals based on this trend: No NFL player placed into concussion protocol this season has played the same week. The last player to be in concussion protocol who played the same week was 2022, when Kenny Pickett had a concussion in week 6 and was cleared to play in week 7.”

If Purdy can’t pull off a quick turnaround in the concussion protocol, the Bengals will likely face Sam Darnold, who has attempted just one pass this year.

Purdy suffered a hit to the head late in Monday’s loss to the Vikings and now faces a short turnaround to Sunday’s late-afternoon kickoff. He’s completed 67.9 percent of his passes this year with 11 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

The 5-2 49ers have lost two in a row, while the 3-3 Bengals enter off a bye looking to make it three wins in a row.
