Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins wants to get an extension done with the team and those around the team have made it clear they want the same.
In fact, with Higgins eligible now, that news could come literally any day, if it does this offseason.
But for now, Higgins looks like one of the very top names set to hit the open market a year from now. A future-minded look at the 2024 free-agent class by The Athletic’s David DeChant actually ranks Higgins ninth overall (technically eight with Jeffery Simmons just getting an extension in Tennessee):
Since 2021, 143 players have run at least 500 routes. Only 12 have averaged more yards per route than Higgins (2.09): Cooper Kupp, Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown, Deebo Samuel, Ja’Marr Chase, CeeDee Lamb, Stefon Diggs, Jaylen Waddle, Tyler Lockett and Mark Andrews. That’s basically a list of the NFL’s best pass catchers.
That number provided is actually pretty staggering even if Bengals fans don’t need further proof about how great Higgins is.
Cincinnati is on the hunt to make sure Higgins won’t be on lists like these much longer. But the fact he charts so highly already explains why getting him a deal — and fitting it in with likely extensions for Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, among others — isn’t the easiest feat to accomplish.
