Benfica could lose seven players for Champions League second leg as double Liverpool risk emerges

Seven of Benfica's first-team squad are one yellow card away from serving a one-match suspension ahead of Tuesday's Champions League tie with Liverpool.

Any player who receives three bookings in Europe's elite competition is made to sit one match out as punishment and could result in some of Nelson Verissimo's key stars being missing for the return fixture at Anfield, should poor discipline be a feature of the first leg.

Spanish left-back Alex Grimaldo and former Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi are the two stars at highest risk of missing the trip to Merseyside as they aim to keep the Reds' ruthless attack at bay when the sides meet at the Estadio da Luz.

There are also problems in both midfield and up front for Benfica, with Joao Mario and Julian Weigl both on two bookings apiece. Both individuals have featured on a consistent basis for the side this season, making 37 and 41 appearances in all competitions respectively.

At the top end of the pitch, attacking trio Goncalo Ramos, Rafa Silva and Roman Yaremchuk find themselves in the same position. Silva would likely be the biggest miss, if banned for the second leg, having contributed 12 goals and 17 assists in all competitions this term.

For Liverpool, meanwhile, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane were both cautioned in matches against Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan and are also walking a tightrope ahead of this fixture. This is something Jurgen Klopp may have at the back of his mind, which could influence his starting-eleven or substitutions made during proceedings in Lisbon.
