Belfast woman finds boxes of ashes in pre-owned TV unit she bought on Facebook Marketplace

A woman from Belfast has found two boxes of ashes in a pre-owned TV unit she bought two years ago.

Laura Laurie was shocked at the discovery made by her husband on Sunday while looking through the drawers to try and find a charger.

She's hoping to unite the remains with the owner two years on, and is trying to reach out to find the person she originally bought the furniture from.

However, Laura has lost track of the messages shared between them in the two years since and is hoping she can track them down through the power of social media.

"We bought it two years ago from Facebook Marketplace from a woman in Belfast, I can't remember exactly where," she said.

"It's a TV unit, it's not even that old. We were looking through on Sunday as my husband was trying to find a charger, and he discovered the first box, then he said there was a second one too.

"I don't know how we didn't know they were in there and how we didn't hear them rattle around in the first place when we moved the thing in.

"The TV unit has two deep cupboards, one on each side, and the boxes were right at the back and they're the same colour as the unit so I think that's why we couldn't see them. They're still in there now, we don't know what to do with them and are hoping we can find the owner. I don't want to throw them out just in case we can find the person they belong to."

Saying they were "initially creeped out" at the discovery, the couple are now hoping the sentimental items can be returned to the owner. The two boxes have no information on them, just two names - one with Tilly and the other with Charlie.

Laura said: "After the initial shock, we were just hoping they're pets and not human remains.

"We were looking to see if there's any more information on the boxes but there's not, it's just the two names. It would be good to see if somebody could come pick them up and be reunited with them."
