Bears QB Justin Fields’ deep ball continues to impress

Last offseason, quarterback Justin Fields was just getting his feet wet working with the Bears offense. But wide receiver Darnell Mooney was immediately struck by Fields’ deep ball — to the point that Mooney was smiling mid-route on his very first catch from the rookie.

Flash forward one year, now it’s head coach Matt Eberflus who was left impressed by Fields’ deep-ball accuracy. And Eberflus indicated that it’s something that will be featured in Chicago’s offense.

“I would say, ‘Man, he throws a good deep ball,'” he told reporters Tuesday. “I’m excited about that. You could see it in the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11s. We’re going to take our shots down the field. He does a nice job doing that, and that’s what stands out to me.”

Fields flashed that ability to connect on deep balls, including some beauties to Mooney, last season. Fields’ combination of mobility and deep-ball accuracy will certainly make things difficult on opposing defenses.

“Those things stretch you,” Eberflus said. “When you get stretched vertically and horizontally like that, it always causes stressors on a defense.”

The Bears are learning a new offense under offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. The offense has been described as “very quarterback friendly” by Eberflus, and Fields has already shown a great understanding just a couple of months into the learning process.

Given it’s an offense that’s going to feature Fields’ strengths, there’s a fair share of excitement surrounding Fields heading into Year 2.
