BBC Waterloo Road first look as series makes a comeback

The famous BBC drama Waterloo Road is returning to the BBC after eight years. The series, set in a school, last aired in 2015 and now first-look images of the new series have been released.

The BBC have confirmed that Waterloo Road will return in January 2023. Featuring some previous characters including Adam Thomas as Donte Charles and Katie Griffiths back as Chlo Charles, the first look photos show what life will be like in the new series.

One image shows current Strictly Come Dancing star Kym Marsh looking very worried as dinner lady Nicky Walters, who we know has a son at the school. Another picture shows Adam Thomas as Donte Charles and Katie Griffiths as Chlo Charles and their new family.

Angela Griffin will return as Kim Campbell and instead of being the art teacher like she previously was in the show, Kim will be stepping into the role of the headteacher. One of the images shows a very stern-looking Kim holding a megaphone. You can read the full cast list here.

Other images show the new pupils enjoying school life. The series will be set in Greater Manchester with filming already taking place and the show has been brought back to replace Holby City, which was axed in March 2022.

The hit show is returning to help ‘boost drama production skills’ in northern England, as the show will be set and filmed in Greater Manchester. The BBC said, “Waterloo Road will use its rich history of telling entertaining and gripping human stories while tackling the important issues of the day."

They added: "The revival of Waterloo Road will boost drama production skills in the North of England and help to reshape the BBC's drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country."
