BBC's Sue Barker sparks 'desperate' Wimbledon panic from John McEnroe

Sue Barker found herself the subject of a desperate plea from BBC colleague John McEnroe after the news that this year's Wimbledon will be her last.

Last month, famous tennis player and Question of Sport legend Sue confirmed she'd be stepping away from commentary box after the 2022 tournament in a statement which read: "She revealed the news in a statement, which read: “What a wonderful time I've had working on some of the biggest sporting events around the world.

"I will miss it terribly but after 30 years I feel the time is right for me. I've worked with the best of the best."

The minute they saw Sue on screen on day one of Wimbledon, which saw Andy Murray disrupt the BBC schedule with his opening match, viewers were reminded of the fact that Sue would soon be stepping down, something that was also addressed by outspoken pundit McEnroe.

"I have heard some very disturbing news, is it possibly true that this is your last Wimbledon? Are you kidding you are an icon here!"

He added: "We all agreed we would only go as long as you can. Now you have put the pressure on us! What is going to happen next? Henman are we going to have a tournament next year?"

Former British tennis pro Tim Henman was also in the studio and joked that Sue had decided that 30 years working with McEnroe was enough, to which she replied: ""You two are probably saying it's 29 years too late that I am going!"

Quick to shut down that notion, the American replied: "No of course not, and we have got to savour every last day here this is unbelievable. No really, this is incredible, forget about these matches let's talk about you, why have you decided to do this?"

Sue responded: "So I can sit up there and watch a bit of tennis and enjoy a bit of it and let someone else do the hard work"
