BBC's Huw Edwards was close to tears as he announced the death of Queen Elizabeth live on air.
The news presenter has been fronting a BBC One news special throughout the day, since lunchtime, and he was clearly very emotional as he paid tribute to the Queen following her passing. The Queen passed away today peacefully in Balmoral.
As the words BBC News Report was shown on the screen, Huw Edwards - wearing a black tie and suit - spoke to announce the sad death of Her Majesty. He said: "This is BBC News from London. Buckingham Palace has announced the death of Queen Elizabeth."
Royal Editor Nicholas Witchell added: "One does, this - for the nation, for them - is an absolutely massive moment. It's a moment of great solemnity and national sadness and it's hard fully to take it in. It is an incredible shock. Many people will feel a sense of personal lost. Others will find it very disorientating. It is the end of what history will judge as one of the most remarkable reigns."
A statement by the Royal Family announced the Queen's passing.
"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," the post on social media read.
News broke around lunchtime today that the Queen was under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned for her health. Buckingham Palace confirmed this in a statement as her children and grandchildren were at her bedside.
Other members of her family had rushed to be with her, and a rare statement was issued.
A statement earlier today read: "Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral."
It was an unusual announcement, which appeared to confirm the seriousness of the Queen's health. Statements about the royal family's personal health are rarely made - and there had been a wide concern following the statement.
Earlier today, the BBC pulled their usually programming in favour of a rolling news item about the Queen's health, which was helmed by Huw Edwards. Royal Editor Nicholas Witchell spoke of his concerns for the Queen at the time.
