BBC Eat Well For Less? does a fresh v frozen food test and the results might surprise you

Eat Well For Less? continues to show viewers how they can make their money go further and on Thursday's, June 23 hosts Jordan Banjo and Chris Bavin debate whether fresh food is truly better than frozen - with perhaps some surprising results. Earlier in the series, Jordan and Chris showed a breakfast calorie swap, which you can read about here.

In this week's episode, the team were on-hand to help the White family improve their foodie spending habits. The family, who's fridge "confused" Chris, were spending extortionate amounts on takeaways and having dinners out. Despite a weekly shop costing £75, the Whites spend an extra £100 on food in restaurants and on takeaways.

The subject of fresh vs. frozen came up when Jordan said: “A lot of people, myself included, feel that fresh is a bit healthier and more nutritious and the best way to go, even if it means spending more money.” The presenter and dancer described how, although his family mainly relied on tinned food, their attitude to fresh food was that it was always better for you.

Ever aiming to prove otherwise, Chris laid out various food and drink items in front of him. “I always think if it’s fresh, it’s more nutritious,” said Jordan. Chris said that Jordan is “right to think that” but it isn’t that simple. Playing a game in which Jordan had to taste what is fresh and what is not, the dancer seemingly struggles to determine the difference.

Looking at two types of pasta, Jordan said that the two taste “identical” but despite this, he said that he prefers the fresh pasta. Chris explains that fresh pasta is made with egg and dried pasta is made without. Although tasting exactly the same, dried pasta costs 5p per serving and fresh pasta is almost 34p per serving.

Next up, Jordan tries two types of fish. After trying one that is frozen and one from the chilled section, Jordan struggles to determine which is which. In terms of price, the fresh fish is nearly double in price compared to the frozen, despite tasting and being nutritionally the same.

Finally, the pair look at ready-meals. Chris lays out three ready-meal chicken curries in front of Jordan. The Diversity star said that he believed that a premium ready-meal is the best for you. Chris proves otherwise and the frozen meal is actually the most healthy.

Concluding, Chris said: “I’m just trying to prove that just because something is fresh, it doesn’t mean that it is better for you,” to which Jordan replies: “Makes sense”.
