BBC Crimewatch appeal to solve shocking murder of hero detective Jim Morrison

A fresh TV appeal to solve the murder of a hero police officer fatally stabbed as he tried to apprehend a mugger 30 years ago has been aired. Off duty Detective Constable Jim Morrison, 26, had just left a pub in central London to walk home when witnesses saw him trying to arrest the suspect.

The thug pulled a knife and ran off, but brave DC Morrison threw off his coat and jacket and chased him. The suspect stopped outside the Indian High Commission in Covent Garden, turned and stabbed unarmed DC Morrison three times before vanishing into the night-time traffic and streets busy with partygoers on December 13, 1991.

It was a Friday night two weeks before Christmas and the streets were busy with revellers and theatre crowds leaving evening shows, so police believe there were many potential witnesses to the chase and murder. An international manhunt led to inquiries in France, Belgium, Germany and Canada and several suspects were arrested, but no one was ever charged.
