BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker hit by realisation as he confirms leaving date ahead of Channel 5 move

Dan Walker has admitted he'd been hit by a big realisation as he confirmed when he will make his final appearance on BBC Breakfast, ahead of his move to Channel 5.

It was last month that former Football Focus host Dan broke the news that he'd be leaving the Breakfast red sofa behind to make a surprise move to another broadcaster. In a video shared on Twitter he said: ""I'm really excited but this has also been a massive decision for me as I love BBC Breakfast, I love working alongside Sally (Nugent) and I love the team there. But Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans and I don't think opportunities like this come along very often and I can't wait."

Dan will step into the Channel 5 News job held by another former BBC anchor, Sian Williams. On replacing her, he said: "I know how popular she is with both the team and also the audience, so all I can say is I will do my very best to maintain her high standards."

After speculation as to when Dan will follow former co-host Louise Minchin off BBC Breakfast, Dan finally revealed all on Tuesday morning, breaking the news to current colleague Sally that he'll be waving goodbye on Tuesday, May 17, to which Sally replied: "That's not may shifts left is it? That's not many early alarms calls." Dan told her: "six more three o'clockers then I'm out of here!"

Addressing the reaction to the news he's quitting BBC Breakfast, Dan added: "The other thing to say is thank you to everyone who's sent so many lovely messages. One thing I've realised is that a lot of people chat you you about this programme as it means am awful lot to an awful lot of people."

He added: "It's reminded me how special this show is. and how much how everyone watches it loves it," to which Sally told him: "You've been a big part of people's lives for the last six years, every morning."
