The BBC has made the bold decision to call time on a staple part of its broadcasting by axing the classified football results from its radio stations.
The broadcaster has been reading out football results since the early 1950s, with thousands of announcements keeping football fans up to date with scores every Saturday. They were first read out by John Webster before being made famous by James Alexander Gordon, who delivered the results in his trademark Scottish accent from 1973 to 2013 before passing on the baton to Charlotte Green.
All of that history ended on Saturday, when the classifieds were conspicuous by their absence on BBC Radio 5 Live. The British institution has been discontinued as the BBC attempts to modernise its output.
