A new ice rink is set to open on the Thames at Battersea Power Station in time for Christmas.
Londoners will have the chance to skate on the 1,200sq m rink, centred around a towering 30ft Christmas tree, from November 11.
The Grade II-listed power station reopens on October 14 as part of a major £9bn redevelopment project.
Glide at Battersea Power Station is being billed by organisers as “the most magnificent open-air ice rink in the city”. It is run by IMG - the firm behind Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and the Natural History Museum’s popular ice rink - and will be able to hold up to 300 skaters at a time.
Stephen Flint Wood, executive vice president and managing director at IMG, said: “We are delighted to be staging the first ice rink at one of London’s most iconic buildings.
“As the city’s newest winter attraction and after the remarkable renovation of this landmark site, we expect Glide at Battersea Power Station will be extremely popular and recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.”
At its peak, Battersea Power Station supplied a fifth of London’s electricity before it was decomissioned and shut down in 1983.
A £9billion regeneration project of the area has seen the power station restored and repurposed as a leisure destination, alongside the creation of more than 4,000 homes, a new NHS facility and 19 acres of public space.
The ice rink will open between 9am and 10am daily, with the last session running at 9pm on weekdays and 10pm at weekends.
Tickets start at £8 for children aged 12 and below, £12 for adults, and £36 for families. They go on sale this Friday (October 7) at glidebatterseapowerstation.com.
