Barry Ferguson in 'given time' Rangers verdict over Giovanni van Bronckhorst amid sack calls

Barry Ferguson believes Giovanni van Bronckhorst 'should be given time' amid calls for the Rangers manager to be axed.

The Dutchman has come under fire from a section of the Light Blues support after a Champions League thumping at the hands of Liverpool at Ibrox. Scott Arfield had netted the opener but the Reds roared back with Mo Salah grabbing a six minute hat-trick as part of the huge win for Jurgen Klopp's side.

The result comes off the back of a 4-0 battering by Ajax in Amsterdam as well as a 3-0 loss at home to group leaders Napoli and a 2-0 defeat at Anfield in the first part of the Battle of Britain showdown - with Allan McGregor's heroics keeping the score down. Van Bronckhorst also lost out in the first Old Firm derby of the season against Celtic with Ange Postecoglou's men running out 4-0 winners. Despite that heavy defeat only two points separate the rivals at the top of the Premiership table, with Rangers hero Ferguson pointing that out and the fact they could be in a domestic cup semi final by the middle of the week.

He also cited last season's success in reaching the Europa League Final and lifting the Scottish Cup as evidence that he is more than capable of being in the top job.

Speaking on Go Radio, he said: "I can understand the Rangers fans being angry. But in terms of them wanting Gio out, I still think he should be given time.

"Listen, they're only two points behind in the league and they've still got a quarter-final next week against Dundee to come to make sure they get into the semi-final.

"I think he did enough last season to show that he's more than capable of being a Rangers manager.

"I still believe he's a good manager and I still believe he should get the time."
