Barcelona v Newcastle LIVE: Reaction after hosts hits seven to reach Champions League quarter-finals

Barcelona blew away Newcastle United with a remarkable second-half surge to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Eddie Howe’s side had managed to match the Catalan club for the first three halves of the tie, but found themselves served with a brutal reminder of the gap between them and the European elite as Barcelona struck four times after the interval at the Camp Nou on their way to a 7-2 win on the night.

After an entertaining 1-1 draw in the first leg, the tie had continued in nip-and-tuck fashion during a hectic first half as Anthony Elanga twice hit back after the hosts had gone ahead. But Lamine Yamal converted from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time, setting up a second-half blitz in which Robert Lewandowski struck twice to take Barcelona into the last eight after an 8-3 aggregate win. Next up? La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid, after they avoided a collapse against Tottenham.

Barcelona blow away Newcastle in brutal end to Champions League dream

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:50 , PA

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha killed off Newcastle's Champions League dream as Barcelona survived a first-half fright to book a quarter-final place in style.

The 37-year-old Poland international hit the Magpies with a quick-fire double before the Brazilian struck to seal a 7-2 win on the night - a 13th on the trot since their return to the Nou Camp - and an 8-3 aggregate victory on a night when Eddie Howe's side imploded.

Anthony Elanga's first-half brace had cancelled out Raphinha's early opener and Marc Bernal's free-header, but Lamine Yamal's stoppage-time penalty opened the floodgates with Fermin Lopez, Lewandowski and Raphinha again doing the damage.

Sunderland up next

Wednesday 18 March 2026 20:30 , Alan Smith

“We have a massive game on Sunday so there’s no time to dwell or feel sorry for us,” Howe concludes, looking ahead to the visit of Sunderland to St James’ Park. “It’s a huge game for the club, our fans, the whole city.”

Howe on Tonali injury

Wednesday 18 March 2026 20:25 , Alan Smith

“Sandro had a bit of illness before the game and was beginning to fatigue. He felt something around his groin. That could be a problem for us.”

Howe on Barca's movement

Wednesday 18 March 2026 20:14 , Alan Smith

“It’s hard to play against but first half we controlled it relatively well, a lot of high regains and counterattacking opportunities,” the Newcastle manager tells TNT Sports. “It was a great representation of how we played… among that good play we gave them two goals. Those were the key moments in the game.”

Howe reacts

Wednesday 18 March 2026 20:08 , Alan Smith

The Newcastle manager is unsurprisingly flat when appearing on TNT Sports for his post-match interview.

“A tough way to go out,” he says. “Really strange, to sum that up. First half we were excellent but didn’t defend key moments well enough. Second half we were nowhere near as good. And they deserved to go through.

“Psychologically the penalty was a tough one for the lads, very similar to end of the game in first leg. Then they scored quite quickly after half time and we didn’t recover from that moment.”

Damning statistics

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:48 , Alan Smith

Another chastening outcome for the Premier League sides.

But there are two more teams readying for action at 8pm GMT - Liverpool can still progress if they reverse last week’s 1-0 defeat away to Galatasaray, while Tottenham Hotspur face an improbable task against Atletico Madrid having lost the first leg 5-2.

FULL-TIME! Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle (8-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:42 , Alan Smith

90 min: There will be no added time and Newcastle have been put out of their misery.

Barcelona are into the quarter-finals. For Newcastle it is a game too far on their Champions League journey.

Until first-half added time, Eddie Howe’s team were giving Barca plenty to worry about and Anthony Elanga’s counterattacking brace had them in with a big shout to progress.

But then Kieran Trippier fouled Raphinha in added time to concede a penalty, converted by Lamine Yamal, setting Barca on the way to what ended up being a devastating win.

Hansi Flick’s team were exceptional early in the second half, a blur of movement that Newcastle simply could not deal with.

Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle (8-3 agg)

78 min: Barcelona are not showing any mercy. They keep probing, keep searching for another gap to exploit and pad out their stats. Yamal, fed by a delightful pass from Pedri, is denied by Ramsdale.

72 min: It’s getting ugly and this is the cheapest concession so far.

Raphinha pours salt into the gaping wound with a tap-in after Ramsey plays a nonsensical pass across his box that is gratefully taken down by the Barca forward.

Barcelona 6-2 Newcastle (7-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:21 , Alan Smith

69 min: Yamal is now rolling out the stepovers and no-look passes as the hosts toy with their shell-shocked Premier League visitors. Barca will take on Atletico Madrid (or Tottenham Hotspur, should they complete the most unlikely of comebacks this evening) in the quarter-finals with Arsenal or Sporting the other tie on that side of the draw.

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:19 , Alan Smith

68 min: Barca remain dominant and Araujo tries to get on the end of a deep delivery from the left. With Sunderland to come at the weekend, Newcastle’s challenge now has simply become avoiding an absolute battering in the final quarter.

66 min: Now some Barca changes as Cancelo, Lopez and Lewandowski come off to a standing ovation. Olmo, Torres and Espart have entered the fray.

Barcelona 6-2 Newcastle (7-3 agg)

61 min: This is becoming a rout.

Like buses, Lewandowski adds a second in quick succession. Newcastle seem to have switched off. Yamal fools Burn and Willock and sends Lewandowski through on goal. He dummies initially prior to firing across Ramsdale and in.

Barcelona 5-2 Newcastle (6-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:11 , Alan Smith

60 min: Willock is booked for a shirt pull on Pedri after he is turned by the home midfielder. That rules Willock out of his next Champions League appearance, which will not be this season.

Barcelona 5-2 Newcastle (6-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:10 , Alan Smith

59 min: Newcastle’s players look crestfallen as the home fans ramp up the volume.

Barcelona have simply found another gear since the restart and the fluidity of the three behind Lewandowski have been a joy to watch.

56 min: That should be enough to seal Barca’s progress.

Lewandowski, who has been pretty quiet, becomes the fifth different Barca player to score by climbing above Livramento to power home a firm header from Raphinha’s deep corner.

Barcelona 4-2 Newcastle (5-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:06 , Alan Smith

55 min: It is going from bad to worse for Newcastle as Tonali, who had just been spun again by Lopez, goes down with an injury that looks to be severe enough that it ends his evening prematurely.

Willock is getting ready to come on.

GOAL! Barcelona 4-2 Newcastle (5-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:04 , Alan Smith

52 min: Is that that for Newcastle?

It is a clinical break from Barca as Raphinha receives a ball from Martin which splits the Newcastle backline in half. Lopez manages to peel away from Tonali and receives a smooth pass in acres of space. His finish is straight into the bottom right corner, giving Ramsdale no chance.

Barcelona 3-2 Newcastle (4-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 19:00 , Alan Smith

49 min: Barcelona enjoy a long spell of possession that ends with Raphinha bringing a save out of Ramsdale. Well, it ends for about a second before another wave of home attack comes, followed by another until finally Ramsdale smothers a Raphinha mishit.

RESTARTED! Barcelona 3-2 Newcastle (4-3 agg)

HALF-TIME! Barcelona 3-2 Newcastle (4-3 agg)

Barcelona 2-2 Newcastle (3-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 18:33 , Alan Smith

45+1 min: Another massive let off for Newcastle as Yamal skies over from six yards. Raphinha’s initial attempt is excellently saved by Ramsdale, Lewandowski is unable to hit a rebound and Yamal then fails to find the target.

Barcelona 2-2 Newcastle (3-3 agg)

40 min: Brilliant from Burn. Thiaw’s slip allows Barca to break. It is two on one but Raphinha hesitates before playing to Lewandowski and Burn makes a magnificient block before getting back up to head danger away. That looked ominous but it is both fantastic defending and a massive opportunity missed.

Barcelona 2-2 Newcastle (3-3 agg)

30 min: Now Gordon finds the side-netting after Elanga crosses from the right. The assistant referee later raises his flag for offside so it would not have counted anyway.

Barcelona 2-2 Newcastle (3-3 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 18:14 , Alan Smith

28 min: It’s Elanga again!

What a game this is. Yamal is punished for a daft back-heel to Hall who immediately passes to Barnes. He sends in a low cross that Hall almost reaches on the six-yard line but he is lucky not to touch it as Elanga arrives at the back post to slot home.

Barcelona 2-1 Newcastle (3-2 agg)

GOAL! Barcelona 2-1 Newcastle (3-2 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 18:05 , Alan Smith

18 min: Oh dear. Marc Bernal has Barca in front again from a set piece and a defensive mix up from the visitors.

Dan Burn is furious there as he is the only defender to drop back to defend a free-kick, which allows Lewandowski to head across goal towards Bernal. He has so much freedom to convert. And Newcastle have again undone their good work.

GOAL! Barcelona 1-1 Newcastle (2-2 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 18:00 , Alan Smith

15 min: What a break and Newcastle are level thanks to Elanga!

They bait the press brilliantly with Ramsdale finding Trippier at right back. The ball switches to the left where Barnes and Hall combine brilliantly. Hall then sends a low delivery in for Elanga, who is behind the pass to ensure no risk of offside. With Barca’s high line beaten, the Newcastle man steadies himself before finding the net.

Barcelona 1-0 Newcastle (2-1 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 17:56 , Alan Smith

10 min: The game has settled a bit now following that frantic start, Barca playing it around the back. Newcastle were never going to dominate possession here but they simply cannot concede another in the next 15 minutes.

GOAL! Barcelona 1-0 Newcastle (2-1 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 17:52 , Alan Smith

6 min: And after all that promise, Newcastle are behind. Raphinha is coolness personified as he slots low past Ramsdale.

Yamal creates it with a wonderful turn on halfway that leaves Thiaw on the ground. He plays a through ball that squirms past Hall and towards Lopez, who then finds captain Raphinha about 14 yards from goal. He takes a touch to steady and then side-foots clinically past Ramsdale, leaving Newcastle’s goalkeeper with no chance.

Barcelona 0-0 Newcastle (1-1 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 17:49 , Alan Smith

3 min: Now Newcastle win a corner which Trippier takes. It isn’t great but Barca are also unable to clear properly and, eventually, Burn takes a surprise shot which Garcia does well to save. This an impressive opening from the Premier League side.

2 min: Anthony Gordon buys a smart foul from Eric Garcia after 40 seconds with the Barca right back fortunate not to be booked for a cynical shirt pull. Sandro Tonali lines up the delivery from the left but it is half-cleared to Anthony Elanga, whose return is claimed by Joan Garcia in the home goal.

Kick-off: Barcelona 0-0 Newcastle (1-1 agg)

Wednesday 18 March 2026 17:46 , Alan Smith

We are underway on a cloudy evening. Newcastle, playing from right to left as we watch, play it straight back for Aaron Ramsdale to pump down the left flank.

Almost time

Wednesday 18 March 2026 17:43 , Alan Smith

The teams are jogging up the half dozen steps between the tunnel and pitch, they walk under a big blue arch reminding us the final will be in Budapest and emerge to a cacophony of noise.

It does look rather windy going off the flags being waved in the stands.

More from Howe

Wednesday 18 March 2026 17:27 , Alan Smith

Speaking to TNT Sports from inside the stadium just now, Howe says: “We performed well a week ago so looking for a similar performance and take a couple more of the chances we got,.

On Barcelona, he adds: “They could slightly tweak things. Both teams are quite consistent in selections. It’ll be how they use the ball in tight situations. We know we have to be at our very best to qualify and that’s what we’ll try to deliver.”

Suspension concerns

Both sides have four players who are one yellow card away from a one-match ban that would be served in the first leg of next month’s quarter-finals should their team prevail tonight.

Barcelona: Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Gerard Martin and Marc Casado

Newcastle: Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Dan Burn and Joe Willock

New Camp Nou

Wednesday 18 March 2026 17:09 , Alan Smith

Lamine Yamal made his European debut more than 900 days ago but this is his first knockout match at Camp Nou, which is still very much under construction with yellow cranes visible behind the stands.

The players are just emerging from the tunnel for their warm-ups, with TNT Sports saying that Newcastle are in a temporary changing room that means quite a long walk to the pitch.

One change a piece

No surprises from those starting XIs as Eric Garcia replaces Ronald Araujo in the home defence while up front for Newcastle, as expected, Anthony Gordon replaces Will Osula. Both of last week’s starters have dropped to the bench.

Flick outlines Barca target

Wednesday 18 March 2026 16:20 , Alan Smith

Hansi Flick, meanwhile, was emphatic when discussing the La Liga leaders’ goal for this season: nothing short of silverware.

“There's a lot of quality in the squad, and I think we're capable of winning this Champions League, though we need to improve,” he said last night. “Right now, the important thing is that everyone is available and at their best. That's the most important thing heading into the next month."

Including Lamine Yamal. "He’s the player who can make the difference,” Flick added. “He trained fantastically yesterday and today too.”

Howe's key to victory

Wednesday 18 March 2026 16:05 , Alan Smith

Some more from the Newcastle manager here. Asked yesterday what his team needs to advance to the quarter-finals, he unsurprisingly said “a bit of everything.”

“We will try to be ourselves,” he said. “A defensive mentality [like] against Chelsea [whom they defeated at Stamford Bridge on Saturday] - blocking shots, defending in numbers. But also a bit of what we do best - our running capacity, our athleticism. There has been a really good battle between their midfield and ours in both games. We are going to need to be very good in our duels. The battle in midfield will go a long way to deciding the game.”

Howe understands the importance

Wednesday 18 March 2026 15:50 , Alan Smith

In his pre-match press conference Eddie Howe said that a win tonight would “probably” be the biggest of his career. But the Newcastle manager is also confident that his team will not “shrink” against their Catalan hosts.

“We have many, many internationals in the squad so I don’t see that as an issue,” he said. “We have enough players who can cause them problems. We’ll enjoy the game, but we’ll only truly enjoy it if we deliver. I think we’re in a good place to do that, and the players are probably as confident as they’ve been in any stage this season. “

What is the Newcastle team news?

Wednesday 18 March 2026 15:40 , Jamie Braidwood

A late call will be made on the availability of Sandro Tonali after the Newcastle midfielder returned to training on match eve having been unwell. Lewis Miley is likely to be out until after the international break, but Joe Willock should be fit to feature.

Possible XI: Ramsdale; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Ramsey, Willock, Joelinton; Elanga, Gordon, Barnes.

What is the Barcelona team news?

Wednesday 18 March 2026 15:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Alejandro Balde and Frenkie de Jong remain absent for Barcelona, but Lamine Yamal should return to the starting side after illness.

Possible XI: Garcia; Cancelo, Araujo, Cubarsi, Martin; Bernal, Pedri; Yamal, Fermin, Raphinha; Lewandowski.

When is Barcelona v Newcastle and how to watch

Wednesday 18 March 2026 15:30 , Jamie Braidwood

The second leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie is due to kick off at 5.45pm GMT on Wednesday 18 March at Camp Nou in Barcelona.

Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch the match live on TNT Sports 2, with coverage on the channel from 5pm GMT. A live stream will be available via discovery+.

Good evening and welcome

Wednesday 18 March 2026 15:15 , Jamie Braidwood

The Champions League tie between Barcelona and Newcastle is finely poised after a competitive first leg last week.

Eddie Howe’s side produced an impressive performance against the Catalan club at St James’ Park, and will be disappointed to have not taken a lead into the second leg.

Lamine Yamal’s stoppage-time penalty cancelled out a late opener from Harvey Barnes to leave it all still to play for with a quarter-final spot up for grabs.

Can Newcastle enjoy a famous European night and reach the last eight? Stay tuned for the build-up.
