The Barcelona subway system has launched an innovative project called MetroCharge, utilizing clean energy technologies to make public transportation more environmentally friendly. Sixteen stations of the subway system are now equipped to harness the energy generated by the trains' brakes. This energy is used to power the trains and stations, with the excess energy being sent to the surface to charge electric vehicles.
Regenerative brakes, a technology used in trains for decades, capture energy during braking that would otherwise be lost as heat. This energy can be redirected to power electric car chargers, enhancing efficiency and reducing energy costs. The system allows for recycled energy to be utilized locally, benefiting both the subway system and electric vehicle owners.
