Maccabi Haifa boss Barak Bakhar has been touted as a potential replacement for Gio van Bronckhorst but warned there are downsides to managing in Glasgow.
The Israeli guided his team to an impressive win over Juventus in the Champions League group stage but, like Rangers, they finished bottom of their section. Now Celtic midfielder Eyal Berkvoic has reacted to the possibility of Bakhar taking over from the under-fire van Bronckhorst at Ibrox.
The Dutchman’s position is extremely precarious after losing 2-1 to St Johnstone at the weekend, allowing Celtic to open up a seven- point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table. Off the back of a Champions League campaign that saw Rangers deliver the worst performance of any club to have taken part in the group stage, the fans have turned on the former midfielder. A poor result against Hearts in midweek could seal his fate ahead of the break for the World Cup this month.
Berkovic, who spent two years across Glasgow with the Hoops between 1999 and 2001, described Scottish football as “weak” and warned Bahkar that Glasgow was not an easy city to live in. But he pointed to the success Steven Gerrard enjoyed that earned him a move to the English Premier League as one factor that could make a switch to Govan appealing.
"Bakhar for Rangers? Scottish football is weak, two clubs,” Berkovic told Sport5. “You are close to England and if you succeed you can pass like Steven Gerrard, but it is not easy to live in Glasgow with the children.”
Bakhar’s name has been mentioned in Israeli media as a potential Rangers boss. However, Record Sport understands that contrary to reports, no talks have taken place with Maccabi Haifa or their manager.
