Balaclava-clad teen robbed boy, 16, of £800 Gucci bag

A balaclava-wearing teenager robbed a boy, aged 16, of an £800 Gucci bag after he spotted him walking alone. Kyle Kaylor, 18, and another man saw the boy from down an alleyway and followed him.

They each put on a balaclava and approached him asking where he was from, before Kaylor, of Trafford, asked for his bag and took it from his shoulder. But the men were caught after deciding to remove their face coverings in full sight of CCTV cameras.

“You acted as a group, you targeted a very young victim and stole high value items,” Recorder Abigail Hudson said. “He was quite right to put up very little resistance, but I accept the violence you used was minimal.”

Kaylor admitted an offence of robbery and was handed a suspended sentence, along with a number of conditions.

Prosecuting, Ben Lawrence told Minshull Street Crown Court that on July 2 this year, at around 7.30pm, the 16-year-old victim left his home in Altrincham and made his way to get the tram into Manchester city centre. As he walked by the back of the NatWest bank on Back Grafton Street, he noticed eight to ten males stood around.

“One of the group looked at him from down the alleyway before two of the group, including the defendant, put a balaclava on to conceal their identities and approached him,” the prosecutor said.

“They asked where he was from and he said he was local. The defendant then asked for his bag and removed it from his shoulder.”

The pair walked away with the bag, plus the young man’s wallet. In total, £1,000 worth of goods was taken.

Kaylor was later identified by CCTV footage after he removed his balaclava nearby, and was arrested. The bag had been dumped and was not recovered.

Kaylor was said to have no previous convictions at the time.

Defending, Rebecca Caulfield said her client had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend during the day and ‘took that anger out’ on the young boy.

“He says he is influenced by other people,” she said. “Clearly, he is a complex young man, who is fragile psychologically and emotionally.

“He is keen to address his mental health and is going to move out of the Trafford area.”

Sentencing, Recorder Hudson said: “You are a young man with a number of issues. You clearly need help, both for your personal wellbeing and understanding human interactions.

“You need to be interactive and get that help. The professionals can only do so much, you need to be proactive in helping yourself.”

Kaylor, of Telford Walk, was handed 12 months detention in a young offenders institution, order to complete a Thinking Skills Programme, 20 days of rehabilitation activity requirements and 100 hours unpaid work.
