Bake Off viewers fume over Bread Week blunder and call for major shake-up of show rules

The Great British Bake Off viewers were fuming after a Bread Week blunder, which they deemed 'unfair'.

The budding bakers rolled their sleeves up in last night's show in which they were tasked with making pizza, pastries and a Danish sandwich cake.

There were some wonderful creations on offer, including a a delicious looking pain au raisin from Janusz.

But viewers weren't having any of it.

One tweeted: "Not having this - Pan Aux Raisin is NOT bread #GBBO."

Another asked: "It's bread week, why are they making pastry?"

"I believe a pain aux raisins is a pastry not a bread," a third quipped.

While a fourth tweeted: "@BritishBakeOff Bread week but making a pastry dish? Makes sense #gbbo#bakeoff."

But this wasn't the only drama.

At the start of the show, host Matt Lucas explained that two of the contestants were missing.

Rebs and Abdul were nowhere to be seen as the camera panned around the tent - with some viewers joking the bakers had decided to give Bread Week a miss.

However, the Little Britain star explained the pair had been feeling unwell, before teasing: "with your permission, we thought we’d send them both straight through to the final."

Clarifying that his co-hosts's quip was only a joke, Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding added: "Only joking, they’re going to miss a week and hopefully they’ll be back next week."

This year's series is said to be the toughest yet for the contestants.

Judge Prue Leith, 82, said: “In the very early years, the challenges were less challenging, but as the bakers have got better, the challenges have got harder.

“Can you imagine how difficult it is to judge 12 absolutely perfect, identical somethings? It’s impossible.

“So we need to have something that sorts the sheep from the goats.”

Speaking about the class of 2022, the star added: “They’ve learned. They know how high the standard is, but they also know you can learn a lot of the techniques on YouTube. And they practise a lot.”

The Great British Bake Off is on Tuesdays on Channel 4 at 8pm.
