Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas shared the heartbreaking reason for his dramatic weight loss after fans were shocked to see how much he has slimmed down following the latest series premiere.
Many viewers took to social media following the Channel 4 show’s return on Tuesday to declare their surprise – and praise – at the comedian’s slim figure. One fan wrote: “Surprised you haven’t fell down the cracks of the grid with the weight you’ve lost. Fair play!”
Another said: “You look amazing! You’ve lost so much weight (although you always looked good to me!) what is your secret!”

Last month, Matt, 48, revealed he had decided to shape up after seeing himself on the TV. Explaining his weight loss in August, he tweeted: “I was already pretty big and then I went into a large white tent and ate most of the cake inside.
“Then I saw myself on telly and thought 'I can barely fit on the screen' and realised it was time to do something about it.”
Now, the former Little Britain star has added to his explanation during an interview with Gabby Logan on her The Mid.Point podcast. He said: “I’m 48, my dad died when he was 52, very suddenly, his dad died I think at 56, so I was looking at the law of averages here.
“I was very big and I was getting bigger in the pandemic actually. Sort of not being very active, not really going out, not seeing people, just eating a lot of roast potatoes.
“The thing is if you’re big, and by the way I’ve still got a proper tummy, I’m not skinny, by any means, I’ve just lost some weight, I’ve gone from maybe a double XXL, sometimes triple XXXL, down to a medium now I think.”
Matt added he still eats sweets – though he has cut down on his eating habits – and maintains his weight loss by taking long walks along a canal near his home.
The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 on Tuesdays at 8pm.
