Bake Off 2022 kicked off with a Star Wars-themed opening sequence packed with baking puns. The now-traditional comedy sketch at the start of the new series starred Matt Lucas as "Luke Piewalker", Noel Fielding as "Princess Layer Cake". Prue Leith was "Pure-bacca" and Paul Hollywood became "Darth Baker".
It began with the words "A long time ago in a tent far away...well earlier this year in Berkshire" before Matt posed with a pie and Noel appeared with bagels in place of Princess Leia's famous buns. "Nice baps", Matt told Noel, who responded: "They're bagels actually".
Matt announced he could feel the presence of Darth Baker, leading to a growl from "Pure-bacca". Paul then made his entrance, announcing: "I shouldn't have taken the stairs, I'm knackered." "Too many lemon drizzles mate," Noel replied.
Paul then used his light saber on Matt's pie, with the host wailing: "You just burned my pie". Paul responded: "It's fine, it's a little on the dark side."
The Bake Off version of R2-D2 - made up of pans - arrived as Noel told the others his fruit sponge was ready. After he asked the others if they wanted a piece, Matt hit back: "I think you'll be eating that flan solo."
2021's opening sequence saw the gang team up for a baking-themed version of Billy Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart. It was complete with mullet wigs and cowboy jackets, filmed on a stage outside the Bake Off tent.
